What options are available in waterproof flooring?

Up until recently, waterproof flooring options consisted of tile and luxury vinyl. However, two more have now arrived in the US market: waterproof vinyl flooring and laminate. Here is a breakdown of the options.

Wood-look tile

Usually made from porcelain, true-to-life images of grains are created with Inkjet Technology. Like a computer printer, this technology spurts four ink colors simultaneously, resulting in some of the most intricate patterns imaginable. Before Inkjet, tiles were hand-painted, a slow and not accurate process. All colors are available, including the high trending variation, and the tiles can be cut into planks of any size.

Porcelain is a type of ceramic made of a non-porous clay called Kaolin, together with sand and glass. As a result, it's heavier, denser, and ideal for busy, heavily trafficked rooms, like the bath. It's also a large-format tile that results in fewer seams, making it suitable for stone echoes because of a more continuous slab look.

Luxury vinyl: stylish, affordable waterproof floors

Images of wood, stone, and tile are taken digitally and have clarity and vibrancy with knots, grains, swirls, veining variations, vivid colors, and tile patterns, cut into planks or groutable squares. This also uses technology, such as micro beveling and embossing to add depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered sand distressed. It is cut into planks and is mainly associated with hardwood and stone.

Waterproof vinyl is a newer, more advanced version of luxury vinyl, thicker, more durable, and created with the WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite) cores. These cores will never peel or ripple, no matter how much water there is or for how long.

Waterproof laminate

Thanks to the unique construction, laminate is now available in a spill-proof version, eliminating all concerns about staining and rippling. In addition, now it is possible to install laminate in any room in the house, including the kitchen and bath, where it was avoided due to moisture issues.
